How to use Document to Markdown
Convert local PDF text, supported Word structure or HTML into Markdown you can review and copy.
- Choose one local PDF, DOCX or UTF-8 HTML file, or paste HTML. Choosing a file does not parse it. Try the labelled sample without consuming a file-tool run.
- Free: 100 MiB PDF/DOCX or 16 MiB HTML, 16 million extracted characters, 2,000 PDF pages. Pro: 500 MiB /64 MiB /64 million characters /10,000 pages. Expanded archive, structure and output limits also apply.
- PDF reading order is approximate; no PDF formatting, tables or automatic OCR. DOCX supports ordinary headings/emphasis, bullet/decimal lists, links and unmerged rectangular tables. HTML supports a structural subset. Layout, embedded images and active content are discarded. Review before using.
- Choose Convert, then compare the raw Markdown excerpt with its inert rendered preview. Preview is bounded; Copy Markdown and Download Markdown contain the complete supported result. Rendered links and images never load external resources.
- DOCX uses stored field results and can include hidden-style text; headers/footers, notes, comments, drawings and page layout are omitted. Tracked revisions, embedded documents, merged/nested tables and unsupported numbering reject. Tables use the first row as a Markdown header. HTML source styling is discarded; CSS-hidden text can remain.
- Cancel, edit, Clear or leave to terminate local work and discard exports. Files/results are not uploaded or saved to an account; downloaded files remain on your device.
Common questions
Which Word files and document structures work?
DOCX supports an unencrypted ZIP32 stored/deflate subset with explicit sizes and verified checksums. ZIP64, streaming data descriptors, archive comments, macros and duplicate paths reject. Free/Pro: 200,000/1,000,000 retained XML or HTML nodes, nesting64; main DOCX XML64/256MiB and auxiliary XML8/32MiB. These budgets are independent of the source-byte limit. PDF needs selectable text; no automatic OCR or reconstructed page layout.
